Hybridon, Inc. |
|
Located in Cambridge, MA, Hybridon was founded in 1989 to exploit the pioneering work on antisense of Paul C. Zamecnik, M.D., who is regarded by many as the “father of antisense.” Hybridon remains a leader in antisense technology to this day. More recently, Hybridon has leveraged off its scientific expertise to broaden the applications of its synthetic DNA chemistry. The Company now has four technology platforms:
• CpG-based immunomodulatory oligonucleotides (IMOsTM) that act to modulate responses of the immune system;
• Antisense technology, which uses synthetic DNA to block production of disease-causing proteins at the cellular level;
• Synthetic DNA drug candidates that are designed to enhance the antitumor activity of certain marketed anticancer drugs thereby increasing their effectiveness; and
• CycliconsTM, novel synthetic DNA structures for identifying gene function, which can be used for target validation and drug discovery as well as for PCR-based gene amplification.
Hybridon’s technologies can potentially be used to treat a wide variety of diseases. However, the Company’s research efforts presently are focused on the treatment of cancer, infectious diseases and asthma/allergies. In addition to use as monotherapies, Hybridon’s synthetic DNA can potentially be used in combination with other drugs for applications in combination chemotherapeutics, vaccines and antibodies.
