Jack McAllister is vice president for institutional investment affairs for The National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT). NAREIT is the national, non-profit trade association of real estate investment trusts (REITs) and publicly traded real estate companies.
In that capacity, Jack serves as an advocate for the REIT and publicly traded real estate industry among institutional investors, including pension and 401(k) plan sponsors, endowments, foundations and these investors' consultants and advisors. In addition, Jack has written on the performance gap between defined benefit and defined contribution plans, the need for portfolio diversification in defined contribution plans and the use of REITs in building optimal portfolios.
Before joining NAREIT in August 2000, McAllister was an Investment Advisor and Portfolio Manager at the UMWA (United Mine Workers of America) Health and Retirement Funds, where he was responsible for overseeing the investment and management of $700 million of institutional real estate. In that capacity, he was responsible for formulation of investment strategies and guidelines and the development of portfolio structure.
Jack also has extensive experience in all aspects of investment management services for large defined benefit trusts, including investment policy statements, strategic asset allocation, external manager searches and investment performance analysis.
Prior to his tenure at UMWA, McAllister spent 12 years at Wheat, First Securities as a stockbroker, working with individuals, small corporations and pension plans.
McAllister is a graduate of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he earned his bachelor's degree in Economics. He has been active in various industry organizations such as PREA, NCREIF, and ARES and speaks regularly at investment and real estate industry conferences. He currently serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of GlobeSt.com
